The Apathetic, a contemporary, literary novel, tells the story of army specialist Bill Metson, and his two friends, Matt and Andrea. Stationed in Baghdad, Bill and his squad survive countless missions without suffering casualties, until a mortar attack on their base, set up by Bill's Iraqi lover, Leyla, kills the majority of Bill’s squad. Bill is sent back out on missions, but is unable to cope with the chaos and carnage of combat until he befriends a medic who teaches Bill about emotional anesthesia. Bill learns how to turn off his emotions to be an effective soldier, but he is unable to turn them back on after he is forced to kill Leyla. Upon returning to Vermont, Matt and Andrea try to help Bill revitalize his dormant emotions, but it isn’t until Andrea is attacked by her former lover that Bill’s apathy finally thaws.

We have all seen the movies "The Deer Hunter", "First Blood" and "Born on the Fourth of July": and while they are all great movies about veterans coming home from deployment and learning how to deal with the adjustment back to "normal" life, they all seem to miss the mark when it comes to reality. The Apathetic, on the the other hand does a wonderful job of telling a realist, yet still compelling story of a man returning home after having his sense of normalcy flipped on it's head. The main character, Bill Metson goes through an extremely damaging emotional trauma while serving the U.S. military in Baghdad, and is only able to cope by, in effect, switching off his humanity. While this is all well and good out on missions in an enemy infested desert, it really doesn't lend well to his return to American society.
Mr. Eliassen brings his character back to a small quite town in Vermont and thrusts him into a difficult family dynamic, a rekindling of a friendship and a budding romance. To make any of these situations workable or even bearable Bill must learn to reconnect with his emotions. He doesn't do it by playing russian roulette, going on a rampage in the forrest, or growing extremely silly mustache. Instead, Eliassen has his character evolve through real life experiences and relationships.
Eliassen's writing captivates you right from the start, and doesn't let you down throughout the entirety of the story. He is able to capture the feeling of both wartime in Iraq and the diametrically opposed "peace" of a small town in Vermont. His characters are developed to the point, that I feel I've known some of them in my own life. This book is very accessible for anyone who has ever known a veteran or spent any time in small town America.
I only put this book down to enter the delivery room for my first born child, but picked it up right afterward. Great book, great author, and a great way to spend under $2.

The Apathetic edition by Dillon Eliassen Greg Garceau Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Upon reading the first 3 words of this book, Bill and Ted teleported into my room with the cliffnotes of being awesome. Inside they wrote about things such as drinking coke, wearing shirts with wolves, curing cancer and performing karate kicks. They tried to dissuade me from delving deeper into the riches the author had portrayed within his creation. I read the 4th word and Slash suddenly appeared and performed a guitar solo as my eyes peered towards the 5th word. OH MY GOD. A dinosaur with lasers shot Bill and Ted and told them not to bogart the awesome. The rest of the book was mindblowing.
